Systema Solar – “Bienvenidos” – SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist

Posted by admin on March 18th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 6 Comments »

Systema Solar is a musical-visual collective from the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
It ‘s members, originating from a diversity of territorial and sonorous latitudes have found in the afro Caribbean vibrations a sea of possibilities to renovate the strength and spirit of Colombian music. The objective of the collective is to create audio-visual performances with their own style which they denominate the berbenautika. Influenced by the spirit of the Colombian piko culture (sound systems style performances), the members of the group come together to create, adapt and reinvent different music through improvisation, emphasizing the cult of joy and dance. They recycle the afro Caribbean and folkloric music of Colombia such as cumbia, bullerengue, porro and champeta and fusion these through electronic tools with contemporary rhythms and cultural styles such as hip hop, house, techno, breakbeat, breakdance, turntablism and live video performance. Systema Solar was created at the end of 2006 for a performance at the opening ceremony of the biennial of contemporary art of Medellin MDE07, since then, the group has presented itself all over Colombia and released its first CD in 2009 titled Systema Solar.
Come and dance with us, Systema Solar!

The album strays away from all the musical features you are used too, blending all genres of music, in hopes to set the bar for a new unique sound. They will be doing nationwide tours the whole season. Tour dates go up very soon! Continue to support, and keep your eyes out for the upcoming tour dates and their debut Sumerian Records release!!!

Breathe Carolina – “Hello Fascination” – SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 25 Comments »

When Dave Schmitt and Kyle Even formed Breathe Carolina in 2007 they didn’t anticipate that their project started “just for fun” would explode into an internationally sought-after band in just two short years. But like all the best, most exciting new bands, Breathe Carolinas unprecedented story began with a fan-base that grew organically, fueled by an enviable, rapidly spreading word-of-mouth, and the undeniable spark of something unique.
The story of Breathe Carolina is a modern day music fairytale of two friends who recorded tracks on GarageBand at home in Denver, CO, put them on to MySpace and rapidly gained a huge online following that transformed their hobby into a career, and them into stars. We got started just by hanging out, reflects Kyle. We just sat in a room and threw ideas back and forth, and had to take trips to the library to talk to people online because we didn’t have internet at our house. We honestly weren’t expecting anything, we just made some songs and people started hitting us up about them. It’s been way crazier than anything we could have imagined it to be.

Advice for Indie Artists from Derek Sivers (Founder, CDBaby)

Posted by admin on December 29th, 2009 and filed under indie music artist | 25 Comments »

This clip is taken from the special features of the DVD for the documentary film “What is INDIE?” (www.whatisindiemovie.com). The DVD has over an hour of special features, including Advice from Derek Sivers (CD Baby), Panos Panay (Sonicbids), David Wimble (Indie Bible) and others, as well as Featurettes, Resource Listings and a hilarious Blooper Reel!

In defining what it means to be ‘indie’, as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, “What is INDIE?” ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide.

*******************************

Without any prior background in film (except for watching Super-Size Me “way too many times”) and funded entirely with his own credit cards, Montreal director Dave Cool has taken the film from a small do-it-yourself project and turned it into an indie success story in its own right that continues to turn heads in the music and film industries, even catching the attention of CNN.com, Newsweek Magazine and Canada’s National Film Board.

Posted by admin on December 15th, 2009 and filed under indie music artist | 25 Comments »

At a time when independent artists in the music industry have more power and control over their careers than ever before, “What is INDIE?” tries to determine just what it really means to be ‘indie’.

In defining what it means to be ‘indie’, as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, the film ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide.

The film features interviews with indie music experts including Panos Panay (Founder of Sonicbids), Derek Sivers (Founder of CD Baby) and Suzanne Glass (Founder of Indie-Music.com), as well as with 20 artists including Ember Swift and Paul Cargnello.
