MTVs Video Music Awards have often incorporated dark and strange acts, containing some occult symbolism. This years version, however, outdid itself. The show left most people wondering what was wrong with Kanye West or trying compute the madness of Lady Gagas performance. The only way to understand the full meaning behind those performances is to look into esoteric teachings. The fact is that the whole awards show took the most common rituals of occult orders and re-enacted them in a show witnessed by the entire world.
This years VMAs were very different from other awards shows. They focused on a very limited number of artists (Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga), while ignoring many others who were equally successful. The chosen artists became characters in the VMAs ceremony and acted out different ritual dramas. This might sound totally crazy to the average MTV viewer but those acquainted with the practices of occult orders (such as Freemasonry) can decode the references to sacred rituals. There are numerous types of fraternities and rituals, from the most noble to the most infernal, and they have existed throughout History. The VMAs were decisively inspired by dark, sinister and even Satanic ceremonies. Lets look at those rituals.

The guys of 21:03, along with Fred Hammond, J. Moss, & Smokie Norful are burning up the Gospel music charts with their hit single “Cover Me”! The song is touching hearts all over the world with its beautiful and anointed lyrics. Thanks Joshua for helping me!
Remember to cover me
that I might go in peace
Remember to keep me lifted
that I might go in spirit
Keep my name on your lips
When you pray remember this :
I need you to cover me
Continue to cover me
that I might go in peace
Continue to keep me lifted
that I might go in spirit (Hallelujah)
Keep my name on your lips
when you pray remember this:
I need you to cover me
Continue to pray me
that I may go in peace
Continue to keep me lifted
that I may go in spirit
Keep my face on your mind
when you go to God next time
Cause I need you to cover me
Cover me with your prayer
Cover me from the snare
Cover me even though you can’t be there (even though you cannot be there)
For the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much

This episode of Boing Boing Video is brought to you by http://www.wepc.com/.
Director Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow , Black Snake Moan ) talks to us about his latest project — the MTV online series $5 Cover, which chronicles the internet-age lives and dreams of struggling musicians in Memphis, Tennessee.
$5 Cover is described as “a rough-and-tumble show set in the clubs, bars, and all-night cafes of present-day Memphis,” and follows “young musicians as they fight for love, inspiration, and money to pay the rent.”
These are real people, but this is not reality schlock.
When I first saw clips of the series in production during a visit to the MTV offices, I knew it was going to be great. I grew up on MTV as a teen, but am not generally a fan of MTV’s current on-air programming. I’ve felt for some time like the network no longer produced stuff I’d find interesting.
But this is different. Maybe part of what allowed something this authentic and engaging to incubate at MTV is the fact that this is primarily an online series.
And then there’s the fact that Brewer is at the helm. I’m a big fan of his big-screen work, and he clearly loves the stories at the heart of $5 Cover — the lives and art of musicians who are his own community, in Memphis.
Boing Boing asked Brewer how the internet is changing what it means to be an independent artist, and how technology is changing the nature of what “local music” means. He talks to us about why he created the show, how this is different than directing for film or television, and why all of this matters so much to him.
When MTV sent us a DVD of the completed episodes, Boing Boing Video’s editor and I watched them all, back to back, and then vowed to buy some of the music online. I’m not kidding, it’s that great. We went particularly nuts about Amy Lavere, an artist featured in the first part of the Boing Boing Video episode. She’s from Memphis, by way of TX and Louisiana. Al Kapone was another personal fave.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Will this be on iTunes?
–No, not the iTunes store, but it can be in your iTunes for free. Download it from my website, djearworm.com. You don’t need to pay the iTunes store to put free mp3s in your iTunes software, you just download the mp3 and then double-click on it (or drag it into your iTunes if that doesn’t work).
2. Why is that artist I hate in your list, and why isn’t that artist I love in your list?
–This is based on the Top 25 songs of Billboard’s 2009 year-end list. I didn’t choose the songs. The complete list is here: http://www.billboard.com/charts-year-end#/charts-year-end/hot-100-songs?year=2009
3. Why is that song from last year in the list? Why isn’t that song which was so popular toward the end of the year on the list?
–Billboard’s cutoff date is Dec 1st, to give them time to calculate the results and publish them well before New Years Day, which is good for me, since I need a little time to put this together and release it before the end of the year!
4. How long did this take you?
–If you add it up, about a month. About two weeks earlier in the year using educated guesswork, and then two weeks between when Billboard released the list and when I put it out.
5. What software did you use?
–Ableton Live for arranging the music. It’s AWESOME, and it’s what I use to DJ live with as well. Final Cut Pro for the video. For acapella extraction, see the next question.
6. How did you get the vocals without the instruments?
–if you search for “acapella” with the name of your song, you might find an isolated vocal. In some cases, I use a bit of Adobe Audition (the Center Channel Extractor effect) for vocal isolation. This removes instruments that are to the left or right in your stereo, and leaves only the sound that’s in the center. You can also use this effect to take an instrumental and a full track to create an acapella. Check out my book “Audio Mashup Construction Kit” for more details on this technique, there’s a whole chapter on it. In a few instances I used Melodyne Studio for vocal isolation.
7. What are the lyrics? Who sang that one part? I didn’t hear that one artist!
–I’ve posted the complete lyrics here, as well as a guide to where each of the lyrics and instruments came from:
http://djearworm.com/united-state-of-pop-2009-blame-it-on-the-pop-lyrics.htm
8. I want to make mashups, do you have any tips?
–Learn as much music theory as possible! Get ACID or Ableton Live, and learn it well. Make sure you understand key and tempo, so you can sync everything and get the parts to harmonize correctly. If you’re of a technical mindset, my book “Audio Mashup Construction Kit” covers my techniques in great detail.
9. Can I repost this video?
–please, no, and thanks for asking! Use the music however you want, but don’t simply repost the video in its entirety on your channel. I lots of people are doing it, but I wish they wouldn’t!
10. Doesn’t this prove how much pop music sucks nowadays and is basically interchangeable?
–Not at all. If you alter the tempo and pitch of any music enough, you could get anything to fit together, whether it’s Bach or the Black Eyed Peas. What it does prove is how far technology has come to make these alterations sound convincing. I’ve manipulated some of these vocals HEAVILY.

Mac Mall’s GHETTO THEME music video directed by Tupac Shakur aka 2Pac aka Makaveli. Classic Bay Area rap music video.
Mac Mall, (born Jamal Rocker in Vallejo, California) is a West Coast rapper who became known in the mid/late 1990s, as one of the local artists bringing the Bay Area on the hip hop map. Mac Mall was discovered by Mac Dre and was signed to Young Black Brotha Records.

VALLEJO’S CRESTSIDE neighborhood occupies a tear-shaped square mile on the northeastern edge of town, wedged between a major thoroughfare and the freeways shuttling tourists to nearby Marine World. Centered on Crest Ranch Park, with bucolic street names like Miravista and Haviture Way, it was clearly designed as suburban space — modest homes with tidy lawns are laid out in traffic-impeding loops and dead ends, at once labyrinthine and insular. But far from being a commuter haven, Crestside is the toughest hood in Vallejo, home to a small, proud, extremely close-knit African American community that contributes a disproportionately large share of talent to Bay Area hip-hop.
