Is rap fading away from mainstream music?

I think that song that that rap artist made should be taken literally…."We’re going down"…Yea I believe it.

I believe rock should make a bigger comback, because when you hear alot of rock songs, then are usually on a positive sincere note, whereas rap music is centered around guns and robbing people.

Well put. Not all rap is based on guns and robbing people. Let’s see, sex, drugs.made up words, etc. My personal opinion is rap is NOT music. It is poetry with a beat. Some is good but most is over played and repetitive. Most of the "classic" all time FAVORITE songs came from The Beatles, Lynard Skynard, ACDC, Aerosmith, etc. which is Rock N Roll! Rap won’t make history! Nirvana WILL! :) Keep on rockin :)

I disagree; however that new pop-rap form of music by artists like Akon and Flo Rida is doing well in mainstream music.

Well I hope it doesn’t go away, but I would like to see rap revert to the way it was when originally came out. When it was all about goofing around and having a good time. I’d REALLY like to see R&B go out the window. It’s all the same song.

I sure hope so. I’m not a rap fan so I’m biased, but I’m sick of hearing it. And I’m sure people are sick of hearing my rock, but like you said, rock songs are usually better content-wise than rap.

being a fan of rock i would hope so but in order for that to take place we need a legend to arise or so a series of them you know like a bob dylan or jimi hendrix that just shocks everyone
rock can but its not at the level that can appeal to get everyone including rap fans to listen

some rap isn’t about that at all.
a lot is, beacuse of the areas rap originated from. people based their lyrics on personal experience.
When you say Rock Music, are you talking about soft rock, Bon Jovi stuff? Cos some might say Disturbed’s lyrics about Devon not going to heaven beacuse she was forsaken is also not that great!!

Is rap fading away from the mainstream? Hardly. The top 10 iTunes best selling songs today include tracks from Eminem, Flo Rida, Kid Cudi, and Pitbull (all hip-hop/rap artists).

Should rock make a comeback? I certainly wouldn’t mind, but I don’t necessarily think it needs to. We’re living in an unprecedented era, where music is waaaay more accessible than ever before (via Internet, portable music, media saturation, etc). More music is being made and distributed than ever before, and "rock" no longer describes a specific genre. Would you like to see grunge rock come back? Indie rock? C*ck rock? Hair metal? We have so many choices in what kind of music is available today, and so many places where we are exposed to it, that whatever is "mainstream" really doesn’t matter.

Rap can keep the Top 10/40/100 charts. I like it better that I have to seek out the specific sounds I like.

Be careful with overgeneralizations–rap music isn’t always just about guns and robberies. In fact, just like rock, there are a lot of different kinds of rap, and gangsta style is only a very small part of it.

yeah rock is deffinetly bigger then rap now a days.
I wouldn’t say that the whole "booz, drugs, violence and sex" image of rap is what is causing it to fade. But I think the whole point of it all being the same is what is making it fail. Its all boring now and I think its really old and the rap industry needs to step it up quite a bit.

    Yeah you got this right.

The major problem with rap music these days is that
so many rappers use profanities and obscene language
in their music. Promote the violent street gang culture as
    a positive thing.
Plus many a rapper seems to get themselves arrested
    for a serious crime.

From what I heard in the entertainment news media that
2008 was the worst year for rap music sales.
Compared to rock music which has steady increase in sales.
