I’m 15 and i don’t know how to get discovered as an music artist. (rap)?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under rap music artist | 45 Comments »

I need some kind of help any thing will help. i’m already using youtube and myspace.

I really hope you plan on venturing into positive rap music. So much of this music contains violence, misogyny, and arrogance. I hope you decide not to condone this behavior. Please think before you rap. There are small children looking up to you.

You can try being good in both places first. Spread the word about you through your friends, and then slowly from there, make it up to the top. Look at top musicians like davedays, thats pretty much how they got noticed.

Start making a new history for yourself. Go join a street gang, experiment with some drugs in front of cops, get into a few fights and develop some nice facial scars, maybe get a tat or two if you feel committed….then, win a freestyle competition…create a cool nickname…and you’re set.

I’m sorry, but at fifteen no one takes you seriously. I had the same problem when I was fifteen. I think the best thing you can do is work on your art, and work on building a fan base. Try and book some local gigs, and maybe even try to play at your school. I know that sounds lame, but I knew this band one time that played at their school’s dances and everyone loved them! I played a gig with them one time and 70% of the people there were to see them, and the place was sold out.

My point is, once you become well known in your local indie scene, things will progress from there. A big part of getting known in the music industry is networking, so remember, be friendly to everyone because you never know who they know, and sometimes the most random people can really help you.

    Good luck. :)

    Yeah use Myspace and that.
Also dont be afraid to put yourself out there.Any opportunity you have to perform just take it.
Even if its at a Jam and Knitting fair, if you get a chance for exposure take it.
Volunteer to entertain at youth centre (if you have them where you are)or a school carnival or even just busk in the street.

It is VERY hard to just get discovered though.A connection in the industry will take you father that talent ever will.So maybe you can get a job running drugs for a real rapper and they can sign you to their label. Or do sexual favour for producer types.Or blackmail someone with a connection in the biz.Just stalk them till you see them strangle a prostitute or something, film it on your mobile and before you can say "dead hooker" you will have a top 10 rap single.

Honestly, some of these people are kind of rude.
    But yeah man.
Todays hip hop really isnt about the lyrics anymore.
You pretty much just need a good rythm, and beat.
    Sad to say.
Im not saying that you cant make money, but if you wanna get on the radio, then thats what you need.
Basically bro, just go to the mall, or some place with many people, carry a cd player with your stuff, and let people listen to it, and ask for feedback.
Have copies with a myspace link attached.
And if you dont wanna give them for free, dont charge like… 15 bucks for it.
Just ask for like, 3 bucks.
Its the best way to do it.
And yeah, go along with the myspace idea too.
Also, look for open mic shows/contests.
Enter your rhymes into poetry contests to see if your lyrics really are that great.
    Study your vocabulary too.
People usually get impressed when they hear words they dont know.
Itll also impress the people that arent stupid, and make hip hop look better, since people usually think hip hop artists are stupid, which is really sad.
Dont worry about the negative shit.
And even if you are black, who cares man?
At least its gettin black people rich then all the other racist pricks, you know?

I tend to agree with the majority of the people who have answered. The likes of MySpace etc are certainly the new stepping stone to being discovered. However I think persistence and constent bombardment of your target audience with your material, both industry people and non industry people alike.

you know, there was this one guy, not really known out side of las vegas but when he was a starting rapper, he was at a grocery store one day and came up to me and asked me if i would like to buy one of his CDs he made for $5 for 5 songs. i really dont listen much to rap but i liked the kids tenacity and bought one anyway. when i finished shopping, i listen to the CD on the car ride home. it was actually pretty good and lucky for the kid, my roommate at the time was a DJ for a local radio rock station. i asked him to listen to it and he said it was not bad and said he knew someone that worked at a rap station in town and he would pass it along.
he do so and believe it or not, about two weeks later i heard his song on the radio during my roommate’s friend’s show. i know that i was the one who did that and it was because he sold me a sample at a grocery store. he didnt know who i knew and knowing is half the battle. it is not what you know but who you know. get out there and tell as many people as you can about your music. someone will listen if it is good.

ever hear of 6 degrees of separation? that means there are 6 people between you and the person you are trying to have discover you

I am an unknown rapper myself known as Fresh Spence. You need to have at least 10 songs before you can recored a cd. You need to have at least one dance song. And you need to show all your friends and english teachers, some of them will get it published and trade marked for you if you are lucky. I am 18, representing our generation. If your song is a big enough hit to get on the radio, then cut the cursing! What I mean by that is don’t let their be any profanity in your songs. Check out the songs Will Smith sings. They don’t have any cursing in their either. Little children will be listing to your songs on the radio, and it is my experience that they sing every single verse and line. They do not need to be learning that at all in their life. Try to be a roll Model for younger kids and teenagers at that. Keep on trying, you will get their. Remember though, it is not too late for our generation to change and be the best and most proper generation their has been since the 1960′s. Me and you could make that happen through our song lyrics! The pen is mightier than the sword.

You want to be a rap artist????

The truth of the matter is that "rap music" has been loosing
sales in the last 6 or so years.
From what I read in the entertainment news media that 2008
was the worst in sales for rap music. While other music like
Hannah Montana(Miley Cyrus) and the Jonas Brothers have
done good in sales and break a few sale records.

Rap is not as popular as it was years ago, mainly because
many other rappers used profanities in their music and
promote the "street gang lifestyle" as a positive thing. That is why
many radio stations won’t play a lot of rap music these days.

Your odds of being discovered are extremely rare these days.
Try getting yourself an agent to represent you, that may help
    your chances.

From what I read in the entertainment news media is that
rap music is on it’s way out.
Try regular rock and roll music.
