Why do poets/music artists use literary devices (similes, metaphors, hyperbole, kennings) instead of just saying the story "straight"?

Because the purpose of art is not to tell a story but to show it.

    What are kennings?

Ok, try this. You could read:
Man: I want you to have an abortion.
    Woman: I’ll think about it.
    The End.

Or you could read Hemingway’s beautifully austere short story, "Hills Like White Elephants."

I’m quite sure I’d rather read Hemingway.

Maybe they are saying the story "straight" but we have nothing better to do but find meaning in everything.

There are two kinds of writing. One is sometimes called ‘expository writing’, and its purpose is just to get information across. A newspaper article is an example of this, or a technical manual. Just the facts, just what you need to know.

The other kind of writing is called ‘creative writing’. In creative writing, just giving the facts is not important, you want to show the reader how you feel about them, or how the characters in the story feel. The idea is to transmit -emotions- rather than just information.

So a newspaper story about a car accident will tell where/when/how it happened, who was hurt, what hospital they were taken to, perhaps what condition they are in. But a short story about an accident will be more about how the characters perceived it, how they felt about it, how it changed their lives, etc. Same event, totally different ways of looking at it. Some things will be exaggerated in the artistic version, and some things will be of major importance that were not considered important in the newspaper story. But dry facts may be left out if they don’t contribute to the emotional paradigm the writer is trying to get across.
