At a time when independent artists in the music industry have more power and control over their careers than ever before, “What is INDIE?” tries to determine just what it really means to be ‘indie’.
In defining what it means to be ‘indie’, as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, the film ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide.
The film features interviews with indie music experts including Panos Panay (Founder of Sonicbids), Derek Sivers (Founder of CD Baby) and Suzanne Glass (Founder of Indie-Music.com), as well as with 20 artists including Ember Swift and Paul Cargnello.

the indie …
the indie stereotype is so stupid
whiny people in skinny jeans listening to music that probably would be good without the pretentious attitude. it shouldn’t even be associated with true indie.
People who are truly indie don’t dress any certain way they don’t make any ONE genre, its basically doing whatever you want to do without the support of any majour establishment. I make indie recordings, and i try (and fail) at making indie films. I have limited budget/equipment, but i can do whatever.

So wouldn’t that …
So wouldn’t that mean that the best way to be indie is to be an entrepreneur and have your own record company? Which in turn could become a major record company in and of iteself? So that would mean Sony, Capitol Records, etc are all indie anyway, or at least were at one time?
My reaction: I think that as soon as big labels stop implementing their own products, they stop being indie. Indie in my opinion refers to products that are not censored, changed by any thing/one else.
