IS IT BEST TO BE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?

I write my own songs and I go to an independent studio and pay for studio time to record my songs! It cost a lot to do this but its something I love to do! I am currently in the process of getting my cd’s pressed and getting the graphic’s done on the cd!

Not neccesary best..it depends onthe situation and you have to weigh your options.

even if you are oneday looking foward to getting you own record deal or not..it is good to have somthing established.your own cds and songs written etc, a local, regional, or internet buzz..record companies are more likely to sing you anyway if you have those things established…so you doin the right thing right now by getting your cd…either way..that cd could make you money and/or be a demo to record companies.

If Badboy or Def Jam wanted to sign you today I would go for it because they have financial backing to make your success more achievable then you do alone..unless your rich..maybe you are.

But you have to measure pros vs cons and see what is best for you

Indendent artists..

Con. Independent artists have to pay all costs so it depends on your budget. But its can be expensive..

Pro. Independent artists have complete creative control of what they are doing.

Con.Videos and radio time, travel, promotion as a independent artist it dificult to pay for

Major Label signed artist

Con.You dont always have complete creative control of your work..people are scared to take big risks with thier investments so in many cases they want you to sound like someone else..it depends on the label and you..

Pro. acess to major producers and song writters and hightech expensive studios….that can make your music quality sound better in most casses then a independent

Pro.you are under a contract..some contracts dont allow people to get up and leave if things dont work out..and many people get shelved..

its good to get a lawyer to look over contracts..

If you want to sell records and be independent I would try to seek a distribution deal with a existing label as a independent.that way you will have some financial backing..though they get a % of your sells.
research it..but whatever deal you do..have a lawyer and research the facts and details.

If you choose to be independent or not

make a name for yourself, use all your resourses, internet(youtube, myspace), talk to club owners theyll consider anything to get more costumers and your making a name for yourself. do shows in your region because you can make a name for yourself faster because you can travel frequently…. If you live in ohio for example get out to det, chicago, cleveland, PA. and hit up NY a few times go to the appollo..

Use all your resources..especial free or inexpensive..For exaple the internet, myspace youtube..facebook..alot of artists get booking from myspace and a few have made it big..that easy access to the world..

making a name for yourslef will help you as a independent to get booked for shows events etc..

or to be more likely to get singed with a major label..

either way you go make the most of what you do..and if you get a deal remeber get a good laywer who knows the business to look over contracts with you and do your research..

Yes. It’s best to be an independent artist right now because in major labels, they own the copyrights and everything to your music. I’d stay stick to an independent label so you have more freedom with your songs. That’s what I’m doing too! Just think, if you spend less money on recording, you’ll have more for live events and promoting your album. Good luck with your CD and do you have a myspace where we can listen to your music? I’d love to hear your tracks (:
