As a matter of fact, judging from their distinctive sound and style, one would probably be safe to assume that “outside the box” is the only place they feel comfortable. The Black eyed peas have been able to successfully dodge Hip hop’s many pigeon-holes and firmly establish themselves inside a personalized niche amongst the materialism and violence that ofter saturates rap music. A hybrid mixture of hip hop and pop, accompanied by the flair of break dancing, has come to define the group’s unconventional form of artistic expression and has helped to catapult them into worldwide super stardom. Grab a plate, earplugs, and your dancing shoes as the Black eyed peas give you a whole hour of noise and phunk.

The single Jimmy Shoe is a tongue-in-cheek track gently poking fun at the obsession that girls have with their shoes as well as being an upbeat and raw hip-pop tale of teenage lust. Although distinctly British, the listener can pick up on the musical influence of US artists that Fugative cites as inspiration, including Sean Kingston and Lil Wayne. During the development of Fugatives debut album, set for summer 09 release, he was a victim of the ever changing music industry when his record label sunk into administration. Undeterred, he continued recording, fulfilled all his live commitments (much to the delight of thousands of avid female followers) and is now signed to independent record label Clotted Cream. 15-year-old Fugative began his career at the tender age of 7 when he started hanging out with Darren Martyn (Shola Ama, The Honeyz) in his studio. Since then he has worked with a host of established UK artists (Kele Le Roc, Johnny Douglas and Darren Hayes) and has welcomed interest from respected US music industry execs namely Kirk Burrowes, former manager for Mary J Blige and part-owner of hip hop empire Bad Boys Inc. The future is bright for Fugative and with Music Week, You magazine, Teen Now and National Radio DJs including Nick Grimshaw tipping him for big things, the new year is sure to see him build further on his impressive musical foundations. 2009 will see Fugative take the lead with his own brand of crowd pleasing Hip-Pop.

A growing number of rap artists are leaving the bad boy hip hop lifestyle for a more spiritual one.

The Canadian Dawah Association says that an increasing number of rappers this year have embraced Islam or acknowledged they had in the past.

Amir Junaid Muhadith, better known by his stage name, Loon, talks to Al Jazeera’s Sami Zeidan about his spiritual journey.

http://www.islaam.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=266:loon&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=18

Amir Junaid Muhadith (born Chauncey Lamont Hawkins, June 20, 1975) better known by his stage name Loon, formerly an African-American rapper who was part of P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records. Amir (Loon) accepted Islam in Dec. 2008 whilst on tour in Dubai, UAE. His inspiring story of rising up from the ghettos of Harlem, NY to street-hustling and later making it in to the rap game and eventually realising the truth of Islam and becoming Muslim, is quite a story. Amir never attained true personal fulfilment despite enjoying the pinnacle of material life (wealth, success and fame), no matter how hard he strove, he couldnt attain that inner peace that can only be realised by submitting to ones Lord, living for the hereafter and not the present life, the complete contentment of believing in, worshipping and supplicating to the Lord of the worlds, practising the beautiful religion of Islam.
