Fifty thousand fans dancing in the sunshine of Manchester, Tennessee cheered on funk/folk superstar Ben Harper during his main-stage performance at the 2007 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. The largest featured in Season One of “Live from the Artists Den,” the concert took place on the 700-acre farm that for four days each year becomes the home of what is widely considered to be the premier American music festival.

What is indie music?

I am a HUGE music fan and I mostly like modern alternative and pop. I cannot figure what indie music is. please include some examples of indie artists also.

"indie" (short for independent as in "independent record label") music is music by bands that arent signed to major record labels, and hardly get any mainstream radio airplay. It is usually rock.. but styles are very eclectic.

Hey again all i thought id just update this since i was online checking this out. i still think it is crazy how this video has gotten so many views. it was just a simple fun thing to make. but thanks again everyone who watches this and leaves comments about the song, it is an amazing song and deserves such comments!

Are there any suggestions as to good indie music sites?

As my musical taste changes and continues to develop, I’m finding that indie-pop and folk music is becoming a regular and dominant portion of my music collection. I’m just wondering if there are any good music sites that showcase and focus predominantly on indie/folk bands and artists. I’m consistently advised and recommended bands, but I’d really appreciate if I could discover and find new music. Your help would be appreciated.

First up is myspace. this is kind of lame as it’s owned by Rupert Murdoch so it diminishes the indie value, however, a LOT of unsigned bands put their music on this site. You can browse music by genre (eg. folk) and sort into categories of ‘MAJOR’ ‘INDIE’ or ‘UNSIGNED’ (in terms of record labels). This can be quite handy if you want to hear relatively small bands (ie. indie or unsigned). Myspace pages also have ‘friends’ so you can see which other bands the band you’re looking at recommend.

Another similar website is last.fm. This site is good as it lets you create an account to create playlists. Also, if you’re on an artists page, a collection of ’similar artists’ are shown – a great way to discover new music with an expectation of their sound!

Although these website are fairly good, my best advice is this:

You can browse the internet all day for good music but you’re never going to get that same romantic feeling of finding a truly awe inspiring album inside a cramped, independent record shop. Buying a second hand, or home produced record is always the best!

Fans of Indie Music, do you buy Indie Music or just listen for free?

I need an honest opinion. I have talked to DJs, club owners, and other bands and they say that most people don’t buy Indie Music they just stream it from the internet for free. Is this really true? Have you ever actually purchased an Indie Music download or CD? If so, who was the artist and what online vendor did you buy it from. Or do you think Indie Artists are just wasting their time trying to compete with the Major Artists?
Say Love and Juliette, thanks for answering my question. The name of my band is the LezBnRocker Chicks. I do love the craft and I have a local following in my hometown, but we are having a tough time getting national recognition. Indie bands are struggling against the Majors because of the cost of promoting our material. Without promotion there are no sales. The Majors say the Indies are hurting their sales, but that’s not really true. What’s hurting the Majors is that all the Indie Band members used to be customers and there are millions of Indie Bands on MySpace!

All Indie Bands love giving away free stuff, but obviously we can’t survive if we never make any sales. Are Indie Bands going to disappear as quickly as the boomed? I think unless Indie Fans start purchasing more Indie Music or unless the Indie Bands get smart and start organizing and sharing resources that the Major Labels will succeed in stamping out our “plague.” LOL!

There’s only one indie group I like (slow club) and I buy their songs from iTunes….. no stealing. :0)

They’re putting up a strong fight, definently no quitting!
