Japanthers music is, all at the same time, poignant, intense, danceable and fun. While they often refer to themselves as “more of an art project than a band” Japanther gets points for making some of the most memorable, hummable and fun music of any art project in recent memory. Japanther is part Screamers intensity, part Misfits anthemery, part RZA samples/beats and part Lightning Bolt art/freakshow.

I’m an independent musician looking to get some of my recordings "out there". Any suggestions?

Posted by admin on April 17th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 3 Comments »

Hello,

I am an independent artist who recently finished some original recordings. They are pretty good (in their own unique way), and I’d like to "get them out there", so to speak. I’m already on YouTube, and the search engine only got me 100 views in a week.

Where is a better place for aspiring musicians to get their works out? I’m trying to make a successful life with music… exposure seems to be what I need.

Thank you!

try tunecore.com which gets your music onto iTunes and you get some of the profits. also, try a myspace or facebook fan page.

Plz Help me with my music class. Rock, R&B, Soul, Jazz….?

Posted by admin on April 15th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 3 Comments »

I have to write an 5 page essay on some of the questions my music instructor has asked us. I tried searching everywhere i believed i could find the answer but had no luck. Please help me out with the following questions…Any sort of help is greatly appreciated. (links, answering a question and telling me where i could find some more info on it, etc.)

1. How have the digital music revolution and the corresponding deteriorationg of the music industry influenced pop music?

2. How have artists made names for themselves under this current climate, as compared to how a rock or black music artist might of made it since 1980? How have artists become self-sustaining and financially independent?

3. How would the independent artist achieve a "hit" in today’s music industry?
I already tried googling the question

For one, it helped because theres more money to be made and alot more items to make it. Meaning you can download for instance "Crank dat" by solja boy or you can get the ring town, and many other things. So I think it gives the artist and really the industry access to more resources and maybe even better resources to getting their music to as many people as possible. On the flip side, it also makes it that much easier to "limewire" things from the internet, taking money from the artist, which could also tie in to the reason people feel music is deteriorating. Times change and so do people interpritation of hip hop and other styles of music, and if a certain group of people are used to listening to a certain type of music, if it changes, but the name stays the same, they are going to revert back to what their comfortable with ie. not listening or purchasing and "new" music by new artists. Hopefully this will atleast give you some ideas, good luck.

2.Many artist nowadays get their name out there from apperances and singing hooks or whatever as apposed to back then I believe they worked alot harder to get their stuff played on the radio or even get taken seriously. It was alot harder back in the 80′s and I think more comp, because almost everyone was putting out good music everyone liked, because they actually cared what their name was on, instead of just recording something because of a deadline or for money. And as far as becoming financially independent, back then people just used to focus on making their music, now people have tools and other things to help them along so they may be able to get things done faster, and because it saves you money and time, and theres nothing like being your own boss and making your own descisions.

3. They can achieve a hit todays time by really just reaching a certain group of people mainly teenagers, since they are making up the majority or listeners. Some people just make good music thats universal.

Sometimes I ramble, but I hope I was a little help.

Where can i get a standard 50/50 record contracts between label/producer & featured artist(s)? Free templates?

Posted by admin on April 13th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 1 Comment »

I’m a music producer/artist/independent record label manager.

I need a simple contract between me and guest vocalists.
The deal is simple- Deduct all costs from total profits from each track they appear on, then split 50/50 between me and the featured artist(s). For example if there are 2 guest vocalists- 50% for me, 25% each for them ie. Producer gets 50%, the other 50% is split between featured artists.

I live in England so i need the contract to be relevant to UK law.

Anyone know where i can get a contract like this for free? Are there template contacts like this available?

THANKS!

I did a search on www.dogpile.com using the keywords ‘downloadable legal document templates’ and got some results. You might try the same, but add UK to the search words. Some of these sites are pay-sites, but most are free.

Good luck!
:)

Here are some of my results:

Aerodrone – “Sceneboy” – SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist

Posted by admin on April 11th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 16 Comments »

Aerodrone is a lean, mean-playing electro pop-rock machine who has danced and rocked its way into basements and bedrooms around the nation through the help of Web 2.0 and phrases like “Hold Me Like A Microphone.” Originally from Oregon before moving to Los Angeles, the group has released the Sceneboy EP to rapid fan response across the world, seen on one YouTube video too many. After numerous gigs around the US and various run-ins with MTVU, Myspace Records, and Warner Music Group as well as awesome fans that work at Dairy Queen, the band has set out to mix new songs with help from producer Mark Needham of The Killers, Inner Party System, Fleetwood Mac fame. The result is a high energy blend of guitar riffs and dance-rock that even Soulja Boy can relate to. Stay tuned for an appearance at South By Southwest in Austin, TX this year plus the READY TO LOVE EP, hitting Hot Topic bookshelves all across the US this spring!

Where in Washington D.C. can I go for a GREAT independent music shop to get some good cds?

Posted by admin on April 11th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 5 Comments »

I’m a huge music buff, and I’m always in search of the greatest music store in the country. I want a cool music shop to not only find great national artists’ cds, but also the obscure cd of the release of local and regional artists as well.

One right in DC is Revolution Records. It is located right outside the Van Ness Metro station, about half a block south. If you are looking for some punk type music, there is always Smash in Georgetown off of M street. However, I am not really sure how much they qualify as an independent music shop. For cheap used CD’s of all sorts of varieties, really whatever people bring in, there is CD/game exchange. One is located in Tenley Town, right across the street from Best Buy. The other in DC is located in Adams Morgan, right next the McDonalds. Another good indie music shop is located further down 18th in Adams Morgan, though I forget its name. Its right next to Maggie Moos. There are a few more stores in Georgetown and stuff, but none that are that great. Sorry to say, but if you are looking for the greatest indie music store in the country, this probably isn’t the best town….

How good does it look for an independent artist in a suffering economy, and a controlled industry?

Posted by admin on April 9th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 1 Comment »

Even though I agree that performance is something I need to capitalize on, performing for an audience who don’t recognize your music can also be very difficult and ineffective. So I try myspace, which hasn’t been that bad, but when it comes to gaining traffic to my site, that’s the tricky part. 1. “Set up various digital properties: Artist site, MySpace, Facebook, iLike profiles etc” (check), 2. “PR your best songs & story to tastemakers in the music press, radio and TV” (check), and 3. “Do lots of live shows and get mixes to DJs, clubs & bars” (check). Of course in the life of an artist those things never get scratched off the checklist.
So my intention is to be recognized worldwide. I’ve opened for a few artists before and so far I still don’t even have video footage of my performances. If I want to put on an excellent performance I’ve got to come out of my pocket for everything! And half the time they’re either not paying or paying very little. I’m one of those not in a rush to sign any record deals or manager contracts type of artist. So what are your thoughts on distribution deals?
Thing is, a manager is vitally important at this stage in my career, however; finding the right one is so difficult. The music business seems to be so sticky an artist can’t know who to trust. Everyone wants to help, but at the end of the day, they’ve got to get something out of it. The life of a striving artist is definitely not an easy one. But then again, what is? I love writing music, recording music, and even though it’s not necessarily easy to get up on a stage and perform, once I’ve perfected the performance aspect I might be able to love performing as well (I’m getting butterflies just thinking about it). How good does it look for an independent artist in a suffering economy, a controlled industry and people seemingly waiting for you to slip? Maybe in another 6 years I’ll have enough money to pay my way into the lime light, or maybe someday I’ll just be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Until then I’ll just keep on keeping on for as long as I can.

Suidakra – “Shattering Swords” – SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist

Posted by admin on April 8th, 2010 and filed under independent music artist | 9 Comments »

While so-called “pagan metal” bands seem to be popping up around every corner lately, trying to conform to current trends instead of coming up with ideas of their own, SUIDAKRA have stayed true to the sound that they have become known for. Reaching new heights in their fourteen year history, the German celtic metallers return full steam ahead with their 9th studio album, “Crógacht”. Combining fast melodic death metal, Irish folk music, and a torrent of harmonies, they prove yet again the ability blend several different influences into their unique sound. To put a spin on things, new elements are introduced, like traditional instruments (bagpipes, banjo, tin whistles), a sixteen member choir and epic orchestral arrangements.
