i like happy and upbeat and emo type too. like i love kate nash and lily allen. please give me good indie music that not alot of people know of! thanks
OK, I adore this singer who goes by the name ‘A Fine Frenzy’ and she’s absolutely gorgeous, music and person. (Oh and if you DO look for her, make sure you look for the lyrics too. Most of the time, you can’t hear what she’s saying but her lyrics are DIVINE)
And then there’s a band called Brandtson. Look for their song ‘Earthquakes and Sharks’ cos it was that song that made me become a big fan. It’s kinda like a Oh-what-the-fuck kinda song and its perfect for dancing like a maniacal person.
Do you know She & Him? They’re this awesome indie folk band with Zooey Deschanel {LOVE her!!} and they’re kinda 60-ish. Used to not like them but I’m obsessed now.
Um, and Between the Trees. Great band.
And of course-
Rogue wave
Iron and Wine
Metric
The Arcade Fire
The Honey Trees
Phoenix
Its probably difficult since the event has so many big named celebrities. If I were you I would check out the event website http://www.essencemusicfestival.com/ and plan for next year. Try contacting the Magazine for more information. And ask around if you go this year.

Im 16 and I have searched all over the internet for adresses of places that will let me perform and auditions CAN SOMBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
check out any places that do gigs. theres no rap scene here. buy my band plays at recordshops that hold teen fridays where local bands perform and such.
For example, lots of people refuse to listen to Miley’s songs because they dont like the tv show, or think shes a brat.
Lots of people dont like U2 because of Bono.
Is it fair to discriminate against the music because of the artist?
The music could be amazing but you may never know?
What do you reckon?
That’s a really good question. The problem is if no one else records these songs, you’ll never know if you like them or not. I couldn’t sit there and listen to an artist (and I use the term loosely) that I did not like long enough to determine if it was a good song or not.

I have many christian artists in my music library, and they are many times categorized as Gospel, Inspirational, or CCM. What I want is a way to find what genre any artist would be so if I want to listen to rock, all of the christian artists will be included with the rest.
Got a computer, brother? Is there a music store at your mall(s) or shopping centers that have a sub-genre system? Maybe you can get to a specialty store? Who knows, the associates there might blow your mind and are parttime musicologists and can tell you straight out what category you willfind your particular artists.
I can help you via the internet. When I was checking out the social network sites (MySpace and Shoutlife) they mention some artists in their music sections and would go so far as to list their contemporaries so you could have some idea.
You can also chack out the obvious (Amazon) and the obscure (), if not the unthinkable (Christianity Today). As a music affiectionado as well as a P&W Leader, I made it a point to check out new artists and those classified as indie artists. They are often listed and registered on sites that will categorize them with well-known folks.
I hope this helps your search, hope you have some fun in the process, and while you’re at it, don’t forget to give God some praise, brother.
This clip is taken from the special features of the DVD for the documentary film “What is INDIE?” (www.whatisindiemovie.com). The DVD has over an hour of special features, including Advice from Derek Sivers (CD Baby), Panos Panay (Sonicbids), David Wimble (Indie Bible) and others, as well as Featurettes, Resource Listings and a hilarious Blooper Reel!
In defining what it means to be ‘indie’, as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, “What is INDIE?” ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as ‘inspiring’ and ‘empowering’ by artists worldwide.

Without any prior background in film (except for watching Super-Size Me “way too many times”) and funded entirely with his own credit cards, Montreal director Dave Cool has taken the film from a small do-it-yourself project and turned it into an indie success story in its own right that continues to turn heads in the music and film industries, even catching the attention of CNN.com, Newsweek Magazine and Canada’s National Film Board.
